Bed Linen Thread Count Myth

There is often some confusion out there as to what is the best bed linen to buy, "200 thread count Egyptian or 1000 thread count standard cotton?!"  Unfortunately there’s no definitive answer. This lack of definition of what is “the best” has lead to an overload of marketing spin making it hard to see products for what they really are. This in turn has resulted in the unassuming consumer paying top dollar for something not even worth half.

The reality is, much of the bed linen out there claim to be something their not. Whether it be truth by omission or a white lie, a trusted brand or an unknown, in this competitive industry it´s hard to tell the real deal until the purchase has been made, used and too late to send back.

At DEIA Living we want to give you the ability to make an informed bedding investment so here´s a quick heads-up as to what to look for when making your purchase.

The most common question we´ve encountered from clients is “Does thread count matter”? At the end of the day it depends how it´s constructed and the quality- like most fine things in life! Beautifully soft bed linen rely on the quality of the raw picked cotton and the resulting yarn. The finest yarns feel incredibly soft against your skin and wear extremely well, like wise the contrary for lower quality materials.

The thread count as it stands is based on the number of threads per square inch of the fabric. This number is based on the threads woven horizontally (weft) and vertically (warp) and tells us how tight the weave of the fabric is. As thread count is the easiest element to add a value to industry wide marketing has had the tendency to focus on thread count creating the belief the higher the thread count, the better the quality. This is not necessarily the case. In reality the fineness of the yarn plays a much bigger part determining the softness of the fabric than thread count by itself.

To put it clearly a 200 thread count weave made from high quality fine cotton will feel better than a 500 thread count weave made from low quality cotton. So when browsing for your next set keep this in mind however also remember if you encounter a high thread count set made from high quality cotton the combination will be beautiful.

We hope this helps you sleep easy!
